More Woes for Wal-Mart
The St. Bernard Parish Council has followed along with leery government districts across the U.S. by enacting a new law that places limits on "big box" stores, such as the Super Wal-Marts that are sprouting up across the country.
The new change to the St. Bernard Parish zoning laws requires developers of commercial or industrial buildings of 50,000 square feet or more to apply for a conditional use permit. This change forces the developers to have their plans reviewed by the Planning Commission, the Parish Council and citizens at public hearings.
This change is a direct result of complaints that the Parish Council previously had no direct means of regulating the development of a Super Wal-Mart that is being planned for a strip of vacant land next to the government complex. The Parish Council can now place conditions of such developments or deny them outright.
The change also affects significant renovations done to existing buildings such as the now vacated Schwegmanns building.
