Stephens to Endorse Wolfe

According to imformed sources, Sheriff Jack Stephens will endorse Scott Wolfe for Parish President. In fact, rumor has it that Stephens has already filmed a commercial with himself, Council-at-Large Candidiate Lynn Dean, and Wolfe all appearing together.

Four Lane Freeways in St. Bernard?

Sometimes you just have to question the decisions people make.

I've got the Government Access Channel on at the moment and an ad pops up for complaining about traffic problems. It lists a 24-hour phone number to call the Sheriff's office. The problem is the picture used as a background.

It shows what I'm guessing is a California freeway in the middle of rush hour traffic. How hard can it be to take a picture of rush hour traffic in St. Bernard Parish? There's a number of prime spots. Gaining access to a roof top or a bucket truck should be no problem for the government. So why the picture of California?

Oh, I'm sorry. Forgot we were talking about the government here. Laziness rules, even in local government.

The St. Bernard News is in serious need of a proofreader. Former candidate for Parish President Clay Cosse has an ad in this weeks edition with the headline "It has been an Honor or Serve You!"

It is very obvious that this is not what Mr. Cosse was trying to say, and that is without reading the text of his ad. But, perhaps it plays into the hand that Managing Editor of the St. Bernard News, Joe Chambers, is trying to play.

In last weeks edition of the News, he published a small ad stating the news "goofed" with "four grammatical errors were made in the advertisement for Mr. Fred Everhardt Jr. in the Oct. 1 edition" of the News. Mr. Everhardt's ad was not the only ad with error as I stated in my October 4 email. Now, Mr. Chambers is using full size prominent ad space to "correct" errors.

In todays edition, is a full-size notice that "errorneous information was printed in an advertisement place by Harvey Encardes in the Oct. 1 edition of the News." If you don't remember the ad, here are my comments about the ad from the October 4th email again:

----
The second ad, paid for by Harvey Encardes, is primarily a reprint of ad
Wolfe ran in 1999 against Lynn Dean. The ad is clearly negative against
Wolfe, but on an underlying area could be negative against Dean also. With
the criticism Wolfe had against Dean four years ago, why are the two of them
so cozy today? Something has changed between the two of them, but what?
Unfortunately, I don't think we will find out before the election tomorrow,
if ever.

Apparently, Wolfe must have known about the ad being placed by the
Vaccarella family, since he has a half-page rebuttal ad with testimonials
from six of his current and former employees. You can see this ad on Wolfe's
web site at:
http://www.scottwolfe.com/articles/articles.php?key=11
----

In the notice this week, Mr. Chambers states the June 16, 1999 ad that was reprinted was corrected on July 7, 1999. I'm really starting to wonder if anything published within the St. Bernard News is correct or not. It also makes you wonder why it takes three weeks to print a correction? Of course, this could just be a prime case of "you get what you pay for."

Two local candidate debates today. The first, hosted by the St. Bernard Chamber of Commerce, will be 11:30 AM at the Tiffany Room. The cost is $16 and includes lunch. Call Peggy Bourgeois at 289-4653 to make reservations as seating is very limited.

The second debate will be at 7:00 PM tonight, hosted by the Alliance for Good Government, will be in the Parish Council Chambers and broadcast on the Government Access channel (6) on Cox Cable.

FCC WTB: Wireless Local Number Portability

A long time in coming, the Wireless Local Number Portability is one month away. What this means is you will now be able to take your current wireless number with you if you switch carriers (you will need a new phone though).

Both New Orleans and Baton Rouge are listed in the top 100 cities according to the 2000 census, therefore cell phone carriers must allow customers to take their existing phone numbers with them to a new carrier by November 24. Other cities will have six months from a request to May 24, 2004, whichever is later.

The cell phone number portability has been a long time in coming. Carriers have managed to get it postponed at least two years if I remember correctly. The next phone battle will be portability between wired and wireless phones. Imagine being able to drop your home phone coverage with BellSouth or Cox and switching the number to a cell phone. You can now carry what used to be your home phone with you every where. Of course, this is only a good idea if you don't have any teenagers in the house. I'm not sure how far off into the future this one will be.

Getting back to just cell phone number portability. If you want to do this, plan ahead and be patient. Your new carrier is going to need some specific details about your old carrier, the phone number is not going to be enough.

Cingular Wireless has posted a short
checklist of what you should be aware of. Verizon Wireless offers their own FAQ.

Again, the caveat will be that although you can transfer your phone number, you will most likely need a new phone. The reason for this is because most cell phone carriers have special programming on their phones or they may use a different technology. There is no standard cellular protocol within the US, which means we have at least three different technologies available for cell phone usage. Your carrier is the one that sets the technology and you phone needs to match the carriers choice.
