Results Trickle in
Don't have all the results in yet from Orleans Parish, but I think it is safe to say that Roland Belsome will be the winner of the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals race. St. Bernard was the parish that would make or break the election for Barrie Beth Williams and she lost by almost 700 votes in St. Bernard. Coupled with another 300 vote deficit in Plaquemines Parish, I don't think her current 300 vote lead in Orleans Parish will grow by another 700 votes (354 of 442 precincts reporting at the time I'm writing this).
Following the trend he started in other states, Democratic Presidential hopeful John Kerry carried St. Bernard with 62% of the vote. John Edwards was a distint second with 19% of the vote.
Suzy Andry won DSCC, District 104, Office A by a slim 20 votes over Susan Klees. Andry did lose out to John Taranto by 30 votes in the DPEC District C race.
Larry J. Denbrum Jr carried DSCC, District 104, Office B with 63% over Bruce Betzer.
Sheriff Jack Stephens just missed total embarrassment in the DPEC race. In a race for five seats and six people running, Stephens came in fifth place, three votes ahead of Errol L. Schultz Jr. The other winners in that race are Roland L. Rodriguez, Sr., JoAnn Celino Lane, Jason E. Landry, and Salvador Gutierrez.
For Republican Presidential candidate, President George W. Bush won with 1,258 votes over Bill Wyatt's 71 (just who are these jokers that voted for Wyatt?).
In a runoff for RSCC, District 103 is incumbent Mike Bayham and challenger Bob Schneida. Bayham carried 46% to Schneida's 24%. This race I think boiled down to name recognition. Bob, since you're reading this, get your name out there and let people know who you are.
Robby Showalter and Steve Fecke easily carried their district's, 104, Subdistrict A and B, respectively, with 90% or more of the vote.
For RPEC At-Large members, Linda Vinsanau lead the pack with 17%. She was the only one to send a flyer in the mail and she has the added benefit of sharing the same name as Parish Accessor Marlene Vinsanau. Name recognition goes a long way in an election. The other four winners were George Cavignac, Jacqueline Dean, Gwen Burkhardt, and Joe Oster, Jr. The three remaining candidates were Kerry Cavignac, Marritt Landry, and Lloyd Andel.
RPEC At-Large Western Division winner was Claude Rome, Jr. At-Large Eastern Division winner was Greg Noto with the smallest margin of victory of any election tonight, 1 vote (122-121) over Gregory Rome.
The last election, which I totally forgot in the days leading up to it, was for Justice of the Peace, Ward F. A run-off between Elaine LeBlanc (44%) and Ben Hollingsworth (29%).
I'm assuming everyone voted for judge, which gave us a turn out of 4,832 voters in today's election(compared to 25,002 who voted for Governor in the November 2003 election). Not even a 20% turnout. I'm sure that number is going to drop even more for the April general election.

Twas the night before the election
It's the day before an election. An election that has very few items on the ballot that people seem to care about.
What should be the biggest item on the ballot, who gets to "run" for president, is a non-issue. On the Republican side, current President George W. Bush is it, with just a single guy from California trying to run against him. The Democratic battle is over with all parties conceding to John Kerry.
What that leaves us with is a battle for Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. A race that barely has any interest, although it has joined Sheriff Jack Stephens and Parish President Junior Rodriguez together in support of Roland Belsome. Getting a post card showing those two joining forces was a shocker, but Belsome is no Scott Wolfe. The post card simply showed a separate portrait of each, Stephens, Belsome, and Rodriguez. Wolfe was able to get everyone in the same room together.
I received another flyer for Steve Fecke as well as an automated phone call. This just makes me wonder, what is up with the State Republican Party and why is there so much interest to get elected to a non-paying position that has no authority over anything?
Personally, I think there is a lot more going on behind the scenes, but we just don't know what it is yet.
Just to recap for the elections tomorrow, here are my choices:
March 9, 2004 Election Choices
- Democrat Presidential Primary - None
- Democratic State Central Committee, Dist 104, A - Suzy Andry
- Democratic State Central Committee, Dist 104, B - None
- DPEC Member at Large - None
- DPEC Member, Dist. C - Suzy Andry
- Republican Presidential Primary - George W. Bush
- REpublican State Central Committee, Dist 103, B - Bob Schneida
- Republican State Central Committee, Dist 104, A - Robby Showalter
- Republican State Central Committee, Dist 104, B - Steve Fecke
- RPEC Member at Large - None
- RPEC Member at Large, Western District - None
- RPEC Member, District C - Greg Noto
- Judge, 4th Circuit Court of Appeals - Barrie Beth Byrnes
Not everyone can vote in all these elections, it does depend upon your party affiliation and precinxt you live in.
Because the turn out is expected to be very low, I urge everyone to go and vote. It should take you no more than five minutes to vote. And if you don't, who will?
