Feds After Foster Apartments
The US Justice Department has announced a lawsuit filed today against Foster Apartments for race discrimination.
The lawsuit, which is targeting the owners and managers of Foster Apartments, alleges that black applicants were told there were no apartments for rent while at the same time white applicants were told there were vacancies.
Under the federal
Fair Housing Act, no one can be denied housing on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, familial status, national origin or nationality. The Justice Department is seeking an order prohibiting the defendants from engaging in unlawful housing discrimination, monetary damages for alleged victims of the defendants' unlawful conduct and payment of a civil penalty.
This suit was reported by UPI in the
Washington Times.
In other St. Bernard news today, the Louisiana Bond Commission has approved
$50 million in sales tax bonds requested by the Parish Council.
The 8 year old Softball All-Star season is kicking off and the team is in need of sponsorships / donations. The money raised is used to fund tournament fees and equipment for the season. The team goals are to teach players how to play and enjoy the game of softball in a positive environment, by providing them with solid fundamentals, while keeping the perspective that this is truly just a game. The girls will travel and play in 8-U softball tournaments throughout Louisiana and Mississippi and hopefully play in a state or regional tournament.

Peanut M&M?
Besides being a crackpot story, you've got to wonder why it took so long to become a news item. According to the
Times-Picayune, Joseph Zuppardo, Jr., 43, of Chalmette, is suing the M&M/Mars company because he bit into an orange candy-coated rock he claims he found in a three pound bag of M&M's.
The incident occured on July 28, 2002 and the suit was filed by his attorney
Thomas Gernhauser on July 24, 2003 seek unspecified damages. Zuppardo is claiming he suffered severe jaw injuries, hearing loss in his right ear and headaches.
I'm no lawyer, and I don't play one on TV, but it sure looks like they just managed to beat the statue of limitations for filing suit. And, I've got to wonder, just how hard was he biting down on those candies? M&M's are not they hard to eat.
Chalmette Middle Student Makes Headlines
A Chalmette Middle School student was arrested this past week for allegely bringing a weapon to school for threatening to kill severa students and the school principal. The incident, which happened on Monday, April 5, occured when the 15 year-old girl was eating lunch with two other students and made the claim that she would be spending time in jail and that the two students should not come to school the next day. The girl then proceeded to tell them she was going to kill them along with the school principal the following day.
At first the other two students thought it was just a joke and ignored the threats, but as the day wore on, the girl made more threats by pretending to pull a gun out of an unused locker and making a slashing gesture across her throat.
The two other students then reported the incident to the assistant prinicipal. The parents of the two girls were notified and the parents of the girl makiking the threats was instructed to keep the girl home until an investigation was completed. One of the parents of the two students threatened called the St. Bernard Sheriff's Office on Tuesday evening and they began their investigation Wednesday morning.
The girl was arrested Wednesday afternoon on a misdemeanor charge of making threats which was upgraded Thursday morning to felony terrorizing.
