Habemus PapamThe 265th successor to St. Peter, the Father of the Roman Catholic Church, Benedict XVI has been chosen to continue the work begun by St. Peter centuries ago.
Much has been said by the media about the candidates for Pope even before the death of Pope John Paul II two weeks ago. It seemed as if, at least once a year, Time or Newsweek would run a cover story on who be the next Pope.
Now that Pope Benedict XVI has been chosen, the media is already attacking him, finding people such as Sister Jeannine Gramick to call his election to Pope as "
devastating".
To Sister Gramick and other naysayers I have these few words of my own to offer.
As practicing Catholics we have to believe that the Cardinals did not simply vote for who they personally felt should get the job. We have to believe that they were led by God to select Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger to follow Pope John Paul II.
Once elevated to the position of Pope, we have to believe that any decisions he makes in guiding the Church is again, not based on personal feelings or beliefs, but are based upon divine inspiration from God.
Although he is Pope, the successor of St. Peter, he is still just a man who can only know God and Jesus Christ through prayer. St. Peter was a contemporary of Jesus, living with Jesus for the two years of his ministry, but even he had trouble faithfully carrying on the work of Jesus, which only proves that no one, no matter how close to Jesus and God, is perfect.
We need to be able to live with the shortcomings of man and realize that the Church has not survived 2,000 years through persecution, war, and corruption by bending to every whim of society. When it is time for a change, the Church will change, if their is a theological reason for doing so.
In the meantime, Vive la Papam!
Be good to yourself,
